Coronet Large Cent

1816 to 1857

No cent coins were made in 1815 and in 1816 a new design was introduced, called the Coronet or the Liberty Head. Two varieties were minted during the span of 41 years that this coin was made, the first called the Matron Head, which lasted until 1839 after which the Braided Hair version was produced until 1857. During this 41 year period, a large number of minor differences occurred, making this coin one of the most variable of all U. S. types.

This coin was bought for the D case and is stored there. It was cleaned, of course, but only cost me $45. This is the type called the Braided Hair version. The name Coronet coms from the band upon which is written the word 'Liberty'.   This is the reverse of the coin at left. But all of the different version of the Coronet cent had the same reverse except for very minor changes that I have not imaged here.

This is an example of the Liberty Head large cent, and the subtype known as the Matron Head, which was minted from 1816 to 1835. The coins made from 1835 to 1839 were slightly different and were called the Matron Head Modified. In 1839, the coins were modified again and were known as the Braided Hair type, which lasted until 1857.

This is an example of the Matron Head Modified version, from 1838. In 1835 the bust was made smaller and the cords in the hair were beaded. This coin is in the Old Cents album.
