Susan B. Anthony Dollar
1971 to 1981
In 1979 the Susan B. Anthony dollar was designed, minted, and released into circulation. After just three years, production was halted due to a plentiful supply of coins and the lack of usage on the part of the public. Although more coins were minted in 1999, this dollar remains unpopular with most Americans and is seldom seen in circulation. The major reason appears to be the smaller size, which is 26.5 mm, about the same size as the quarter, although it is also true that other dollar coins are rarely seen outside of collections. The reverse side features the same Apollo representation that was used on the Ike dollar.
This is a proof coin that I recently acquired. | The reverse of this coin design can be seen below.
My 1979 example above is perhaps worth about $2. and I have an album of these issues, including five proof coins worth from $15 to $150 each. | This is the reverse of the coin, but not the same one that appears at left. |
