Eisenhower Dollar
1971 to 1978

This is a proof coin I bought recently for imaging; it is worth about $16 but this is an estimate because the coin has not been graded.   This is the same coin with a different lighting environment to show the background.
Between 1935 and 1971, no dollar coins were minted in the U. S., with the exception of the 1964 Peace coins that were subsequently melted down. But in 1971, the 'Ike' dollar was designed and released to honor the death of President Eisenhower and also to commemorate the first landing on the moon. The reverse of the coin is an adaptation of the Apollo 11 insignia. Although this issue was the same size as the silver Peace dollar, the composition was clad, with an interior of copper and an exterior of 75% copper and 25% nickel. A special collector's edition was also struck made of 80% silver.
My 1977 example above is uncirculated, cost $2, and is worth about $4 today. And I have an album which contains an example of each issue that was put into circulation.   This is the reverse of the coin but not the same one as at left.
