Ceres

Ceres is the largest asteroid, at a diameter of about 480 miles.   It orbits within the asteroid belt and thus does not ever get very close to earth but can be glimpsed with the naked eye during very favorable conditions.   During the following imaging session it was approximately magnitude 7, being just beyond naked eye visibility.

Images taken October 6, 2002, using the 300mm Nikkor on the 237 camera.   Exposure was 5 seconds at F:4.5.   The two bright stars at left are 27 and 28 Ceti and third magnitude 31 (n Ceti ) is just off the left side of the image area.
