NGC 6995- The Veil Nebula

The Veil is a supernova remnant in Cygnus that lies about 1400 light-years from Earth. The progenitor star exploded approximately 10,000 years ago and would have been a brilliant sight in our skies at that time, rivaling the full moon.

The Eastern portion of the Veil Nebula. Image taken late September, 2006, with the 402 camera and the 105mm F:2.5 Nikkor lens. Exposure was 20 minutes through each of the color filters. Processing with Maxim DL.

The entire supernova remnant- taken early November, 2009, with the ST-8 camera and the 105mm lens. Exposure is 30 minutes through each filter. I also took a set of 60 minute exposures but was disappointed to realize that there was almost no improvement in the brightness of the Western portion of the nebula.
