M9

M9 is rather close to the galactic center, being only about 5500 light-years from the core of the Milky Way. Lying about 26,000 light-years from Earth, the globular cluster is receding from us at an exceptionally high velocity, approximately 224 km per second. Dimly visible in small telescopes, a 12-inch or larger instrument is needed to resolve most of the stars.

Image taken through moonlight on June 26, 2012, with the C-14 operating at F:3.5 and the ST-8 binned 2 X 2. Exposure is 100 seconds.

Date and exposure information lost but likely taken at F:7 or F:11 with the 402 camera.
